Allah says:
“But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the Home of the Hereafter; and yet do not forget your share of the world.”
(Qur’an 28:77)

The Temporary Nature of Dunya

Balancing Dunya and Akhirah means understanding that worship is not limited to prayer and fasting. Every permissible action performed with a sincere intention for Allah can become an act of worship.
Working to support one’s family, helping neighbors, seeking beneficial knowledge, and conducting business honestly are all rewarded by Allah when done with the correct intention.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Actions are judged by intentions.”

Islam neither glorifies poverty nor encourages greed. Wealth is viewed as a trust from Allah.

“The best of you are those who are best to their families.”

Preparing for the Hereafter
Despite engaging with the world, Muslims are constantly reminded to prepare for death and accountability before Allah.

“Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a traveler.”

This hadith encourages believers to avoid becoming overly attached to temporary pleasures while remaining responsible and productive.
Practical Ways to Balance Dunya and Akhirah
- Perform the five daily prayers on time.
- Earn income through halal means.
- Read and reflect upon the Qur’an daily.
- Spend time with family and fulfill their rights.
- Give charity regularly.
- Seek beneficial knowledge.
- Make dhikr and dua throughout the day.
- Avoid sinful and wasteful activities.
- Set both worldly and spiritual goals.
- Remember death and accountability before Allah.
Conclusion
The Islamic lifestyle is built upon balance. A Muslim is neither consumed by worldly desires nor detached from worldly responsibilities. Instead, Islam teaches believers to use the blessings of this life as a means to attain eternal success.
Allah beautifully teaches this balance in the famous supplication:
“Our Lord, give us in this world good and in the Hereafter good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”
