Verse 1:

﴿ بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ ﴾

“In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”

⭐ Meaning of the Words

1. بِسْمِ (Bismi)

Means “in the name of.”
Muslims begin actions with this phrase to seek blessings, help, and protection from Allah.

2. اللّٰهِ (Allah)

The proper, unique name of God.
It contains all perfect attributes and negates all imperfections.

3. Ar-Raḥmān (الرَّحْمٰن)

The Entirely Merciful — Mercy that is vast, universal, and all-encompassing

Linguistic Notes

• Form: Fa‘lān (فعلان)
  This form indicates:
  • intensity
  • fullness
  • something overflowing or reaching completion
  Examples:
  • غَضبان (extremely angry)
  • عطشان (extremely thirsty)

So Ar-Raḥmān implies mercy that is full, intense, and overflowing.

Nature of Mercy

• Extends to all creation without distinction:
  believers, non-believers, humans, animals, plants.
• Includes:
  • Life
  • Health
  • Provision
  • Protection
  • Guidance signs
  • Weather, environment, sustenance

This is the mercy that everyone experiences in this world.

Usage in Qur’an

• Appears as a Name exclusive to Allah, never used for humans.
• Describes Allah’s attribute in this world.

🌙 4. Ar-Raḥīm (الرَّحِيم)

The Especially Merciful — Mercy that is ongoing, personal, and directed toward the believers

Linguistic Notes

• Form: Fa‘īl (فعيل)
  This form indicates:
  • permanence
  • continuity
  • a quality that is stable and lasting

So Ar-Raḥīm implies mercy that is constant, continuous, and particular.

Nature of Mercy

• Special mercy that is:
  • Given to those who believe
  • Felt in the heart, faith, guidance, forgiveness
  • Fully manifested in the Hereafter

This is the mercy that:

• Saves a believer
• Welcomes them to Paradise
• Forgives sins
• Strengthens faith
• Gives tranquility

Usage in Qur’an

• Describes Allah frequently in relation to believers:
  إِنَّهُ بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ
  “Indeed, He is Most Kind and Especially Merciful to the believers.”
• Can also describe people in a limited sense (e.g., Prophet ﷺ described as “Raḥīm”), but never with the scope of Allah’s mercy.
