Khadija bint Khuwaylid, the first wife of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), stands as one of the most remarkable figures in Islamic history. As a successful businesswoman, she demonstrated honesty, fairness, and leadership at a time when such roles were rare for women in society. Her trustworthiness earned her the title al-Ṭāhira (the Pure One), symbolizing a life rooted in ethical conduct.
Khadija’s values were most evident in her support for the Prophet (PBUH). She believed in his mission before anyone else and offered her wealth, emotional strength, and reassurance during the earliest and most challenging years of Islam. Her character revealed values of loyalty, sacrifice, courage, and spiritual commitment. Khadija’s kindness toward the poor, her respect for family ties, and her humility despite her status further strengthened her legacy as a model of moral excellence.
Misconception and misinformation are omnipresent, so is about the conceptions in Islam. To many, Islam is a scary religion that leaves Muslim women oppressed and uneducated. I don’t think we should disparage the traditionalist. They are merely responding on what they know. I believe the more true knowledge people have about the dignified women in Islam, the more fascinated they would be because of universal beauty of its way of life. Through my writing, I wish to bring correct knowledge of true Islam to the people who are confused and lost. It has given Islam everything – freedom, economic rights, political rights and right to express their opinion. Islam permits them to own property, do business and be anything they wish to be in the service of society. I am giving a brief reflection of the significant work done by Khadija bint Khuwaylid (may Allah be pleased with her) who has influenced the course of history.
Khadija (رضي الله عنه) was truly a magnanimous, humble and noble lady. The first and most beloved wife of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), was the first to accept after it had been revealed to him by Jibreel (Angel Gabriel). She is also known to us as Mother of Believers (Umm Al-Mu’mineen). Khadijah (رضي الله عنه) was one of the greatest women of the world and her rank is as high as the great Mary (Mariyam), the mother of Prophet Jesus/Isa (peace be upon him). Prophet Mohammad (ﷺ) says about her: four greatest women of the world are – Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, Faima bint Mohammad, Mary bint Emran and Asiya bint Muzahir (the wife of Phoroah).
Khadijatul Kubra (رضي الله عنه) combined in her person all the attributes which add to perfection. The contribution of this blessed lady to Islam is unforgettable. She took the charge of the family business after the death of her father Khuwaylid. Her wisdom rapidly expanded the business. The magnanimous lady always helped the poor, the widows, the orphans, the sick and the disabled. If there were any poor girls, Lady Khadija (رضي الله عنه) married them off and gave them dowry from the wealth she owed.
When she was married to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), she brought with her all that she has produced by her own intelligence, prudence and foresightedness. After marriage Khadija’s (رضي الله عنه) primary focus was to be the best companion of her husband. Khadija (رضي الله عنه) with great love and devotion rested full authority of her wealth on Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and to ease the difficulty and release the pressure if he felt any.
When Islam came under mounting pressure from its enemies, Khadija (رضي الله عنه) sacrificed all her comforts. She always preferred to standby her husband during the trying moments of his life and his clan and to share the hardships of life with them. She was brought up in the midst of luxury, yet she never complained about the life of struggles and sacrifices in the way of Islam.
Khadija (رضي الله عنه) has collected more “first” in the history of Islam than anyone else. She was the first wife of the last messenger of Allah. She was the first women believer of Islam. She was the first mortal to declare that the Creator is only One and that Muhammad (ﷺ) was His messenger.
Khadija (رضي الله عنه) had great value in the eyes of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Her death on 10th Ramadan of the 10th year of proclamation of Islam was a great blow to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his mission. She has given 28 years of her life and all that she possessed to prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to spend in the cause of Islam.
Khadija bint Khuwaylid (RA) remains one of the most influential women in human history, embodying a constellation of values that continue to illuminate Islamic thought and character formation. Her life serves as a mirror of spiritual, ethical, and social virtues that shaped the earliest Muslim community.

Before the rise of Islam, Khadija was already renowned for her impeccable character. Her reputation as al-Ṭāhira (the Pure One) reflected her honesty, dignity, and trustworthiness in business and society. In a time marked by widespread moral decline, she upheld principles of fairness, transparency, and justice—values central to Islamic ethics.
2. Strength as a Business Leader
Khadija was a leading merchant of Quraysh, managing caravans across Yemen, Syria, and other trade hubs. She employed men based on merit, including a young Muhammad (PBUH) whose exceptional honesty and work ethic deeply impressed her.
Her leadership demonstrated:

Khadija’s success challenges the misconception that women in pre-Islamic Arabia lacked agency or influence.
3. The First Supporter of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
Her greatest reflection of values came through her unwavering emotional, financial, and spiritual support of the Prophet (PBUH). When the first revelation came in the cave of Hira, Khadija was the first person he turned to—and the first to believe in his message.
She reassured him with words that remain a testament to her insight and compassion:
“By Allah, He will never disgrace you. You maintain ties of kinship, help the weak, give to the needy, honor your guests, and support the truth.”
These words reflected her deep understanding of morality and her unwavering trust in goodness.
4. Sacrifice, Patience, and Loyalty
During the boycott of the Banu Hashim, Khadija endured great hardship, hunger, and isolation. Her wealth had already been spent supporting early Muslims, yet she remained steadfast, refusing comfort or ease while others suffered.
Her sacrifices illustrate:

- Devotion to her faith
- Selflessness for the community
5. Compassion and Generosity
Khadija was known for her kindness long before Islam. She supported the poor, helped widows and orphans, and offered her home as a place of comfort.
After marriage, her house became the first nurturing space for the nascent Muslim community.
6. Emotional Intelligence and Wisdom
Khadija possessed remarkable emotional intelligence—she provided reassurance when needed, wisdom during uncertainty, and calm guidance in times of fear.
Her relationship with the Prophet (PBUH) was built on:

- Deep affection
Her wisdom also led her to seek confirmation from Waraqa ibn Nawfal, showing her balanced approach to spirituality and knowledge.
7. Legacy and Continued Inspiration
Even after her passing, the Prophet (PBUH) remembered her with profound love and gratitude. He would send gifts to her friends, visit those she cared for, and speak of her virtues with unmatched respect.
He declared:
“She believed in me when people rejected me.”
“She shared her wealth with me when people withheld theirs.”
