1. Role of Abu Bakr In Islam
Abu Bakr was a good friend of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and one of the first people to believe in Islam. When the Prophet passed away, Abu Bakr became the leader of the Muslim group called the Caliph. He was devoted to Islam and admired for his goodness and intelligent thinking.
“And the first to embrace Islam of the Muhajirun and the Ansar and also those who followed them exactly [in faith].” (Quran 9:100)
2. Abu Bakr’s Imperative: The Need for Quran Compilation
During Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) lifetime, Allah revealed the Quran to him gradually over a period of 23 years. Long ago, people remembered Allah’s words in their hearts. They wrote them down on things like leaves and stones. But when the Prophet passed away, there was a worry that the Quran might not stay the same. Abu Bakr knew it was essential to bring together all the pieces of the Quran and write them down in one book to keep them safe.
“We have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it [from corruption].” (Quran 15:9)
3. Appointment of Zaid ibn Thabit
Abu Bakr asked an intelligent person named Zaid ibn Thabit, who was a friend of the Prophet, to help put the Quran together. Zaid worked hard and gathered all the pieces of the Quran that were written down. He ensured they were correct by checking with people who remembered the Quran from when the Prophet was alive.
“But Allah bears witness that what He has sent down to you He has sent down with His (own) knowledge, and the angels bear witness: But enough is Allah for a witness.” (Quran 4:166)
4. Compilation Process
With the help of other promising writers, Zaid assembled all the parts of the Quran into one book. They wrote each verse very well to ensure its accuracy. After they finished, Abu Bakr and other essential people checked the book to ensure its accuracy.
“So take what the Messenger assigns to you, and deny yourselves that which he withholds from you.” (Quran 59:7)
